If they are watching a bird or squirrel, they are likely enjoying themselves and “hunting”. If it is a dog, a group of people, bikers, etc., it is likely a fear response. Pay attention to your surroundings and what your cat is focuses on. However, this could also be an indication of hunting mode. If they are flicking their tail, they could be agitated and potentially become fearful or aggressive. Either by placing them in their backpack, going to a different area, or just heading back home. If the tal is more parallel with the ground, your cat is likely curious, but cautious. It means your cat is happy and confident in their current surroundings. This is often referred to as a “happy tail” in cats. This can take time and practice to learn, so do your best and try to make note of common things your cat does in certain situations.
